Astronomically an eclipse is the interposition of a dark celestial body between the luminous one and the eye or the passing of the luminous body into the shadow of another body. An eclipse is an astronomical event that occurs when an astronomical object is temporarily obscured, either by passing into the shadow of another body or by having another body pass between it and the viewer. This alignment of three celestial objects is known as a syzygy. In astronomy, a syzygy is a (usually) straight-line configuration of three or more celestial bodies in a gravitational system.

A solar eclipse always occurs about two weeks before or after a lunar eclipse.

Usually, there are two eclipses in a row, but other times, there are three during the same eclipse season.

Eclipses of the Sun always happen at New Moon and eclipses of the Moon at Full Moon.

Eclipses of the Sun always come from the West and passes over eastern world, while eclipses of the Moon come on from the east and passes westwards.

The astrologers of the old had only eclipses, transits, and New Moon from which they made their predictions and they were able to trace definite connection between the changes taking place in the heavens and the courses of human events. The signification of an eclipse having been determined by sign position usually comes to pass exactly at the time when one of the major planet afterwards makes its transit – more so by conjunction or opposition.

A solar eclipse is a type of eclipse that occurs when the Moon passes between the Sun and Earth, and when the Moon fully or partially blocks the Sun.

This partial solar eclipse will be visible from very few locations on land. People in some parts of southern Australia, including those in Adelaide and Melbourne, will see a very small fraction of the eclipse. A majority of this partial eclipse of the Sun will take place over the Pacific and Indian Oceans. The eclipse can also be seen from a very small part of northern Antarctica.

The Punarvasu Nakshatra will be affected along with the Pushya Nakshatra. It is advised that people of these two Nakshatras pray for and to the Deities for their well-being.

A lunar eclipse occurs when the Moon passes directly behind Earth and into its shadow. This can occur only when the Sun, Earth, and the Moon are aligned (in syzygy) exactly or very closely so, with the planet in between. Hence, a lunar eclipse can occur only on the night of a full moon. The type and length of an eclipse depend on the Moon’s proximity to either node of its orbit.

The lunar eclipse that is going to take place on the 27th of July 2018 holds a lot of significance as Mars which is retrograde happens to be on the exact degree with the Moon. As this Mars is retrograde the energy of the eclipse will be highly internalized. This partial solar eclipse will be visible from northern and eastern Europe, northern parts of North America, and some northern and western locations in Asia, making it the most watched solar eclipse of 2018, weather permitting, of course.

Here the planet getting effected would be a retrograde Mercury. It will cross the conjunction point of the Sun and Moon (around 24-25 degrees of Cancer) during its direct motion. It is likely to have an affect on the communication and health systems the world over, specially in areas where it is visible. On a personal level, we need to be health conscious and be aware of our speech, especially towards the health. Also, advisable not to be rough with household staff.

DOS AND DON’TS DURING THE ECLIPSE

DOS

1. Give alms to the poor.
2. One should take a ritualistic bath in the beginning of the eclipse.
3. It is best advised to pray during the eclipse time or do Japa as that leads to higher levels of spiritual resonance.
4. Take bath after the eclipse.
5. You can protect the food by putting Tulsi or Druva grass on/in it. The healing benefits of Tulsi makes the food consumable and the Druva absorbs the negative energies of the eclipse.
6. You must offer water to the souls of the deceased.

DON’TS

1. It is believed that one should not eat food cooked even nine hours before the eclipse.
2. If possible, one should avoid travelling during the eclipse.
3. Avoid going ahead with any important deals during the eclipse time.
4. Pregnant women are advised to stay inside the houses to avoid any ill-effects on the baby.
5. Avoid drinking water.
6. Do not involve in sexual activities. It is not good for the lady to conceive during this period.
7. Avoid giving oil massages.

On a higher note, these eclipses will open channels within with at least two retrograde planets on a given date. Great for inner contemplation on all three counts, especially for those who have a goal set to achieve.
